When the crew from Goodstart Forbes take part in the Forbes Reading Down Town Day on August 24, they will be showing off their knowledge of the book We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.
The theme of this year’s event is “Reading: Find Your Treasure” so the team have chosen the book, replacing the bear hunt with a treasure hunt, and are planning to incorporate music, language and reading activities in their big day out.
The Forbes Birth to Kinder event, which is aimed at families with young children, will host 18 organisations from throughout the community.
“The aim of the event is to promote literacy in children up to five years old,” Goodstart Forbes centre director Vickie Spencer said.
“It’s a great day where we celebrate reading and raise awareness about the importance of reading, talking and listening to children from birth to five years old,” she said.
Ms Spencer said early literacy influenced the way children speak and ultimately their readiness for school.
“This is why we play an active role in community events supporting literacy, such as Birth to Kinder Reading Down Town Day,” Ms Spencer said.
“This year we’ll be one of the 18 stations providing literacy-based activities.”
Research conducted by the University of Queensland shows that an important determinant for a child’s success at school is how much they are exposed to reading from a young age.
Author of the report Professor Luke Connelly said one of the strongest predictors of a child’s success is their level of development at preschool.
“Children in families with more books at home have consistently higher test scores,” he said.
Bunnings, Landcare and Mainly Music are among the other organisations which will take part in the day.
