When Ferntree Gully centre director Rebecca Murray first approached Bunnings about a garden makeover, she was hoping for a few new pots and some fresh soil.
On August 25, the outdoor areas were transformed by 50 Bunnings and Ryobi employees, with 10 Bunnings centres coming together to provide a full makeover.
A fairy garden with an archway and toadstools, blackboards on the walls and new vegetable garden beds have been created at the centre in just one day.
While the smallest members of the crew (Ferntree Gully’s children) were entertained by a magician making balloon animals and doing magic tricks, the workers got down to business.
“It was an amazing day and we’re really happy with the way it all turned out,” centre director Rebecca Murray said.
“We’ve got a gorgeous new fairy garden, a vegetable patch that has been totally redone and a vertical garden in the nursery.”
The centre has four separate play areas which are split into specific age groups. In the nursery area, low gardens were planted allowing the children to water the plants by hand. The toddler area has a new fairy garden, a blackboard wall and four new vegetable and herb gardens.
Pre-kinder children (aged three to five years old) have edible plant gardens, murals and a blackboard area, and the four to five year olds have new colourful shrubs and trees.
“We regularly need to fundraise with the help of our families and we often hold working bees. But when we approached Bunnings asking for help, they took a look at our tired yard and went from there,” Ms Murray said.
“We’re so pleased with the outcome even though we haven’t managed to get outside yet. The weather here is terrible!”
