Story time sparks imagination for kindergarten class

Children’s literature has a wonderful way of a capturing a child’s imagination while at the same time helping to develop vital language and literacy skills from an early age.

To celebrate the joy of reading, City of Rockingham Councillor Matt Whitfield made a special visit to Goodstart Rockingham’s kindergarten class for a storytelling session, where children were dressed up as their favourite book character.

Centre director Louise Munro said having a special guest visit the centre gave children an extra reason to be excited about their everyday literature activities.

“We are delighted the councillor has taken an interest in our kindergarten program and has offered to come in and read to the children,” Mrs Munro said.

“Story time can provide such rich and meaningful experiences for children and it’s also a great way to spark their imaginations at a time when they are most curious about the world.

“For our passionate educators, it’s about establishing a love for learning from an early age.

In addition to learning about stories and narrative from books, kindergarten children also develop their narrative skills as they start to tell stories through pretend play and using props, through drawings and other art, and in their conversations with their peers,” she said.
