Goodstart pair travel to NT

Goodstart centres

When Goodstart Petrie educators Kate Foo and Linda Bush were approached by Advance Archaeology to start a call for donations for a Northern Territory Aboriginal group, they never dreamed they would visit the remote community.

But they have done just that, visiting Waltja Tjutangku Palyapayi Aboriginal Corporation and personally handing out donations.

Goodstart Petrie helped collect donations from families and the wider community alongside Advance Archaeology, which is run by Sheri and Chris Haycock, whose child attends the service.

They then sent the items to the Northern Territory and travelled to hand them out.

During their time in the NT, they visited the Santa Teresa Community Aged Care Facility, the local child care centre and school, and the ACC which is a clinic for families. They also spent a week in Alice Springs meeting the local people.

Goodstart Petrie centre director Megan Fisher said she was very proud of the two educators for collecting the goods and donating their own time and money to the cause.

“As a centre we recognise and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First People of Australia and are very proud to be a part of such a great experience and have educators who have met the People of the Santa Teresa Community,” Ms Fisher said.

“We’re hoping this will now be an annual trip for other educators in the centre wanting to visit and hand out items and we will now be collecting again until next June. Kate and Linda have brought back stories from the centre and are currently implementing this into the kindergarten program.”

The community spent about four months collecting winter clothing, backpacks, gym gear and shoes for all ages from families, filling 10 removalist boxes full of gear.

“The spirit of the campaign was to have local businesses and local families/individuals come together and work together to make this difference a reality and therefor this is how Goodstart Petrie became involved,” Ms Fisher said.
