A rooftop playground, heritage-listed façade and built-for-purpose design have all contributed to Goodstart Early Learning’s Brisbane Adelaide St centre being awarded an Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (Queensland) 2018 Award.
The centre, created by Greenedge Design, took out the Play Space Category for its unique design in Brisbane’s inner city.
Goodstart Early Learning state manager Dr Lesley Jones said the team was thrilled with the award which was a testament to the hard work put in at the beginning of the project.
“We really work on creating the right environments for children to stimulate their thinking and social interactions to inspire a love of learning,” Dr Jones said.
“Given their rapid development, children need to be immersed in activities and stimuli that feed their hunger for knowledge, and that’s what we can provide them with at our Adelaide St centre, and our other centres throughout Australia.”
Greenedge Design Consultants director Greg Thomas said the centre was judged to be one of the top play spaces in this Queensland, and will be now judged on the national stage (winners to be announced in October).
“I would like to congratulate Goodstart Early Learning and the design team for their collaboration on this unique project,” Mr Thomas said. “We are especially pleased as the calibre of entries this year was exceptional.”
Mechanically-controlled sky lights feature at the Adelaide St centre and there is a vegetable patch and a rooftop garden.
The centre, which opened in in June 2017, also has a water play area, a treehouse with a slide, a spider web climber and tunnels.
The playground design features elements specifically designed to stretch children’s thinking and development through active exploration of concepts such as physics and spatial awareness, not to mention problem solving and social interactions.
It has 14 separate classrooms, catering to all age groups from babies to kindergarten.
Children can experience the seven senses as they explore the atrium where they can touch the bark of trees, walk barefoot over the stepping stones and admire the view of the city on raised platforms.
The winners will now be considered for the AILA National Landscape Architecture Awards, to be announced at the Gold Coast in October.
