Goodstart is pleased to announce the appointment of two new directors.
Natalie Walker, founder and managing director of Inside Policy and Chris Harrop, director, Bain and Company, will be joining the board.
These additions follow the announcements earlier this year that Tony Nicholson and Sir Kevan Collins were also becoming board members.
Goodstart chair Michael Traill said he was excited by the depth of experience the new directors will bring to an already strong and robust board.
“I’m pleased to confirm two new directors will be joining the Goodstart board,” Mr Traill said.
“Our long-term goal is to truly shift the dial for all children, but particularly those most vulnerable.
“Chris Harrop brings a wealth of experience around transformational change, as well as spearheading significant big impact initiatives addressing intergenerational disadvantage.”
Ms Walker is the founder and managing director of Inside Policy, a specialist firm that advises governments and not-for-profits on social and economic policy matters.
“Natalie specialises in helping organisations navigate complex policy problems, identifying the core issues and design ways forward, leveraging her love of data, facilitation expertise and design thinking,’’ Mr Traill said.
“In addition, Natalie brings to our board a deep understanding and commitment to closing the gap for Australia’s First Peoples. We know Natalie will play an integral role in helping shape our further recognition and support for the issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
The appointments were part of a broader strategic approach to succession planning on the Goodstart Board.
“Regular board renewal is mandated in Goodstart’s constitution, and is a considered process of review with the board in consultation with our founding partners,’’ Mr Traill said.
“Importantly, it is an opportunity for us to take stock of our future vision and build the depth of our expertise accordingly.”
Mr Nicholson took his position on the board this month, filling a vacant position. Sir Kevan, Ms Walker and Mr Harrop replace current board members Lynne Wannan, Greg Hutchinson and Wendy McCarthy and will join progressively over the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

Chris Harrop is a director in the Melbourne office of Bain & Company, where he has worked for 25 years in the US, UK and Australia, and currently serves on the global Board of Directors. Bain is a global strategy consulting firm with more than 8,000 staff across 56 offices in 36 countries. Mr Harrop has worked with clients in many industries, with a focus on services businesses. He has specialised in projects addressing corporate strategy, customer experience improvement and broad-based transformational change. Mr Harrop was a long-serving member of the Board of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, and is a member of the Board of Social Ventures Australia. He is co-founder of Restacking the Odds, a not-for-profit partnership between Bain, SVA and MCRI that is working to address inter-generational disadvantage in Australia. Chris earned an MBA with honours from IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, and a Bachelor of Commerce with First Class Honours in Marketing from Otago University in New Zealand.

Natalie Walker is the founder and managing director, of Inside Policy, a privately-held boutique public consultancy and data analytics firm that advises government, corporates and not-for-profits on a range of social and economic policy matters. She is a committed advocate for reconciliation and was previously the chief executive officer of Supply Nation, a start-up greenfields company focused on increasing the participation of Indigenous business in the supply chain of Australia’s largest companies. Ms Walker was also the interim CEO of the Aboriginal Employment Strategy which delivered Indigenous employment and training services, as well as policy advisor for the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Unit.

Sir Kevan Collins has worked in the UK public service for more than 30 years becoming the first EEF chief executive in October 2011, having previously been chief executive in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Prior to this role he led a varied and distinguished career in education – starting off as a primary school teacher in London, leading the English Primary Strategy as national director, and then serving as director of Children’s Services at Tower Hamlets. Sir Kevan has international experience working in Mozambique, supporting the development of a national literacy initiative in the USA and advising on the development of a national early years initiative in Australia. He completed his doctorate focusing on literacy development at Leeds University in 2005. He is a visiting professor at the University of London and was knighted for services to education in 2015.

Tony Nicholson has been a senior executive in the social services and policy sector with 27 years’ experience in leadership of diverse and complex community organisations. This has involved a passion for, and a strong record in, service development and innovation, research and policy analysis and compelling advocacy on behalf of those disadvantaged in our community. Mr Nicholson’s advice has frequently been sort by governments, most notably as chair of the Australian Government’s White Paper on Homelessness, chair of the Prime Minister’s Council on Homelessness, Deputy Commissioner with the Victorian Government’s Royal Commission into Family Violence and as amember of the Victorian Metropolitan Planning Strategy Steering Committee. Most recently he was the executive director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence for 13 years from 2004 to 2017.
