Championing a safety campaign focused on the dangers of button batteries, water issues and prevention of burns has resulted in Goodstart Early Learning Western Australia taking out a state-based award.
Goodstart, which cares for 6100 children and more than 5300 families in Western Australia, won the Kidsafe Award for child safety in the WA Consumer Protection Awards.
Goodstart Western Australia state manager Todd Dawson said he was thrilled with the recognition awarded to his organisation for its ongoing safety program.
“Safety is integral in all that we do and our commitment to children, families and communities across Western Australia is not bound by just those that engage with a Goodstart Early Learning centre,” Mr Dawson said.
“We see this as a platform to generate a much larger and longer-lasting positive impact across Western Australia.”
Goodstart was acknowledged for promoting safety information in the community on a range of issues including water safety and the dangers of button batteries.
The organisation was also acknowledged for its partnership with Kidsafe WA for the launch of a burn prevention animated video.
“We also incorporate safety into our educational practice ensuring that we are enabling children to make better decisions when it comes to their own personal safety,” Mr Dawson said.
“We have been proactive in sourcing alternative products to button batteries to ensure there is no risk posed to children, and we have issued a national safety share to advise families of the risk of these batteries and tips on how to minimise or eliminate those risk."
The judges acknowledged that child safety was a key focus for the 52 Goodstart Early Learning centres throughout Western Australia.
“Apart from providing safe play spaces, the organisation utilises its database of more than 5000 Western Australia families to promote safety information to the community on a range of issues including water safety and the dangers of button batteries,” the judges said.
“The national provider of early education and care services recently partnered with Kidsafe to produce an animated video educating children about the prevention of burns.”
The winners were announced during a presentation breakfast at the University Club of WA on the World Consumer Rights Day.
Consumer Protection acting Commissioner David Hillyard said the hard work and dedication of Goodstart Early Learning had been recognised through the awards.
“A lot of effort goes into educating and supporting people with regard to consumer . . . issues and I pay tribute to our partners in the community who do a fantastic job of helping those in need,” Mr Hillyard said.
Other winners in the awards include ABC national consumer affairs reporter Amy Bainbridge and Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre manager Karen Merrin.
