Art auction showcases children's creativity

Goodstart centres

More than 70 pieces of art have been created by children aged from six months to five years to raise money for a family going through a rough time.

Goodstart Nightcliff educators have been busy encouraging children to indulge their creative expression through art, the results of which will be auctioned off in a community art auction at the centre on May 27.

Among the collection of colourful and unique artworks – a combination of individual and group art pieces – are paintings in a variety of mediums, collages with a range of interesting textures and glued objects, self-portraits, and even a very cool robot made by the preschool class.

Centre director Tameka Meehan said the proceeds from the auction would be donated to a Nightcliff family who is going through a difficult time.

“This is the third year in a row we have held a public auction of children’s art and this year we are hoping to raise more than $2,000 to support one of our families in need,” Ms Meehan said.

“It’s our biggest ever auction and a lot of imagination, enthusiasm and love has gone into the art creations this year – children have gone all out to showcase their creativity.

“Supporting creative-expression experiences for infants, toddlers and kindergarten children is always a fun challenge for educators.  We experiment a lot with different materials and surfaces, and try to create projects that link back to children’s individual interests.

“We are hoping the community comes out to see what children have created and purchase these unique artworks to add colour to their home or work place. We’ve had wonderful support in the past and hope we can bring something extra special to our event this year,” she said.

Goodstart has received donations from local businesses including a two night accommodation voucher at a local resort, two family vouchers for a local children’s play centre, and a family voucher for a local wildlife park, which will be used as prizes in a raffle throughout the auction.

The art auction will take place at Goodstart Nightcliff, 159 Dick Ward Drive in Nightcliff, on Saturday, May 27, from 10.30am to 1pm. The event is open to the public and entry is free and will include face painting, a sausage sizzle and other activities.
