Bees the focus at Goodstart Preston

Goodstart centres

A celebration of honey bees has been held at Goodstart Preston, in recognition of Honey Bee month.

As part of their commitment to sustainability, the team at Goodstart Preston are working with the Little Sprouts Program, which came up with the concept of celebrating Honey Bee month within the centre.

Preston centre director Kate Malcomson said the families and children loved their bee festival on May 16, enjoying a visit from local beekeeper Damien Hoban, and tasting plenty of honey treats.

“We had a big box of honey donated for the event, some honeycomb for the children to take home, and even some honey hand cream for families to enjoy,” Ms Malcomson said.

Teaching the children about sustainability was important to the centre, Ms Malcomson said, with carefully designed and planned spaces to encourage a stronger understanding of the environment.

Little Sprouts Program founder and managing director Carolyn Luder said Honey Bee month aimed to teach children, staff and families about the importance of honey bees as pollinators of food and how we can help them survive and thrive.

“It’s also about exploring the wonders of honey bees, beehives, honey and beekeepers,” Ms Luder said.
