Goodstart is committed to including vulnerable children in mainstream early learning, and that was the focus of a presentation at the recent World Association Infant Mental Health World Congress 2018 in Rome.
Goodstart Senior Child & Family Practitioner Alma-Jane O’Donnell was invited to present at the conference about the importance of including children who are at risk of abuse and neglect within early learning services.
“To meet the needs of their most vulnerable infants and improve Infant Mental health outcomes for at risk infants, Goodstart Early Learning has developed national trauma informed policies, procedures and practices,” she said.
“The presentation, which had the title, ‘Enhancing infant mental health outcomes for infants at risk or in out-of-home care, entering the early learning sector,’ demonstrated Goodstart’s model to ensure that children at risk of abuse and neglect can be effectively included in mainstream early learning services at scale.”
The presentation focussed on the vital role early childhood education environments play in providing secure and nurturing environments for infants exposed to trauma or traumatic events and the need for a clear process for communication between individual children’s child protection service workers and their early learning service.
“Goodstart Early Learning has developed trauma informed policies, procedures and practices to be implemented nationally and include Emotional Support Plans that are completed before any infant in the child protection system transitions into a Goodstart Early Learning Service.”
The forum attracted more than 2000 people from around the world who specialise or are interested in infant mental health.
