House Rules challenge an award-winning concept

Goodstart centres

When the team at Goodstart Ingle Farm decided their centre needed a little extra love and care, they decided to do their renovations a little differently.

Rather than hold the usual working bee on a Saturday, and calling in help from the centre community, the team came up with the idea of holding a House Rules challenge, inspired by the television show.

All room teams were invited to be part of the challenge, each room nominated a designated play space to be renovated by a competing team, and each room set their own house rules for their nominated play space to be adhered to by their renovators.

The teams were given a budget of $500 and a circle of trust was created to ensure the learning environments created would be meaningful spaces that reflected the rules.

The result is a stunning centre transformation, and a win in the 2018 National Goodies Awards in the Learning Environments category.

The Goodies recognise excellence in Goodstart centres and showcase the best practice and commitment to delivering high quality education. There were 19 national winners this year, and 700 nominations submitted.

In her Goodies nomination, centre director Kate Trepic said the team was excited to see what could be created when “new eyes look into the existing spaces”.

“We were very proud of how our teams pulled together during this challenge,” Ms Trepic said. “Their commitment to creating play spaces that represented their team’s visions resulted in amazing play spaces.”

She said the children were loving exploring their new environments and plans are already underway to run the challenge again next year – with the possible inclusion of a parents’ team.

The Goodies judges found the House Rules challenge reflected creative practice, trust and team excellence.

They found communication and trust were the critical ingredients for a day spent improving the play spaces in the team’s personal time.

“The impact has been great and children and families adore their new learning spaces,” the judges said. “They have also put their hands up to be part of the next House Rules Roopena challenge.”
