Health service offered to community

Goodstart centres

A local child health nurse is making a positive difference to children’s health and wellbeing, providing free health checks for children at Goodstart Early Learning Baldivis.

Centre director Rossann Reeves said the aim was to provide better health services for children and families in the community.

“We identified that there was a considerable waiting period for families wanting to see a local child
health nurse, so we partnered with the Western Australia Department of Health to convert one of our unused interview rooms into a health clinic,” said Ms Reeves.

The centre is now home to Lorna Jones who works as a child health nurse three days a week.

“Lorna has been a great addition to our centre. She offers free health checks to families with children from birth to four years of age. This includes purple book appointments, and monitoring growth and development,” Ms Reeves said.

“Lorna works in conjunction with local health professionals and services so that all aspects of children’s health and development needs can be addressed. She also offers home visits for parents of newborns and facilitates parent groups in the community.”

Ms Reeves said the service has helped cut down the waiting period for families wanting to see a local child health nurse.

“The centre has received wonderful feedback from families who have used the health nurse service, with families saying that they are pleased to get an appointment quickly and it helps them keep up to date with their child’s health.” she said.
