New natural yard helping to ignite children’s imagination

Igniting children’s imagination through creating a natural ‘open canvas’ was the thinking behind the major renovation of the outdoor play area at Goodstart Bathurst.

New sandpits with a running splash pond and hand pump, plants, shrubs, dirt and rocks are just some of the features of the new yard. Paths lead to further exploration and a mud kitchen with its own tap, kitchen sink and containers for children to make their own special creations.
Centre director Emma Kentwell said children loved their new yard, which has less focus on plastic and synthetics and more focus on natural spaces.

“Having a more natural outdoor area gives children the opportunity to use their imaginations a little more. It gives them more to think about by encouraging them to come up with new ways to do things with less,” Ms Kentwell said.
"Our aim with the new environment is to encourage the children to be actively involved in being environmentally friendly and embed sustainable practices.
“For example, the hand pump is linked to our centre’s water supply, and we only have a certain amount of water available each day. This helps us to teach children about using water wisely, it is a finite resource and something we shouldn’t take for granted.
“We are already seeing such a positive response to the renovations. Our educators think it is just wonderful to see children embracing nature, creating mud cakes, coming up with new games and really letting their imaginations run wild.”
Ms Kentwell said the centre wanted to thank Bathurst Landscapes for bringing its vision to reality: a natural outdoor play space where children can ‘challenge themselves while taking healthy risks’.
