Sailing the high seas will be a part of everyday play for the children at Goodstart Belmont as they enjoy their new purpose-built timber boats.
The 2.5m long boats were made by the Wynnum Manly and Districts Men’s Shed and gifted to the Belmont Rd centre last week.
Designed by Men’s Shed group member Errol Smith the boats have been varnished for outdoor use and have drainage holes for when it rains.
Belmont centre director Amanda Underwood said the collaboration was part of a drive to create community connections in the area.
“We originally got in touch with Men’s Shed because we had heard about some of the great work they were doing in the community,” Ms Underwood said.
“We came up with the idea of creating the boats and received some donations from local MPs,” Ms Underwood said. “We held a big afternoon tea for the Men’s Shed guys when the boats were finished and we’re working with them now with the idea of introducing woodwork to the centre.”
Ms Underwood said she was proud to be working with Men’s Shed and that her families were enjoying the results of the centre’s community connections.
“Working with different groups in the community is a big drive for us. We do the Nappy Collective (where unused disposable nappies are collected and redistributed to organisations that support families in crisis or in need).
“We also do Cereal for Coffee where we donate cereal and receive a coffee in return.
“We’ve had a fantastic response to this work from all of our families and are really enjoying working with our community.”
The Australian Men’s Shed Association is the peak body representing more than 930 Men’s Sheds. It was established in 2007. The Wynnum branch was started in 2011 and now has about 80 members.
