Strengthening community ties through sustainable arts and crafts stall

Goodstart centres

Goodstart Woy Woy recently attended its local Woyopia sustainable and eco living festival, running an arts and crafts stall using all recycled and natural materials.

At the festival, Goodstart educators helped children to decorate recycled cardboard photo frames with natural materials, and to create wands by threading ribbon onto sticks and adding bells. The hall was decorated with calico bunting that had been decorated by the children at Goodstart Woy Woy using their own painted handprints.

Centre Director, Tracey Davis said their desire to be involved was two-fold.

“The festival was at a local school which is always helping us out and coming down for our events so we thought we could give back. We also have been promoting sustainability so thought it was a great opportunity to support sustainability awareness within the community,” said Ms Davis.

“It felt so rewarding being part of the day and we are looking forward to getting involved with more community projects and events,” she said.

The centre’s involvement in the event has strengthened relationships with the Woytopia organisers, who posted a thank you message on their website, and invited the centre to a volunteer BBQ.

The centre has a worm farm and vegetable garden, uses only recycled paper, cardboard and donated items for arts and crafts, and sends leftover food scraps home with staff and families for their pets.
