Townsville teacher's tips on regional work and living

Purposeful career paths for educators among 'nature, community, and opportunity'

Early childhood teacher Kylie Ryan of Goodstart Kirwan Golf Links Drive shares her insights.

Careers and employment

Article by Deni Kirkova

Did you know? Townsville offers a full, purposeful home and work life. Kylie Ryan is a lifelong resident and a Goodstarter of 10 years. She knows all about life in this beautiful Queensland city - just a stone's throw from the Great Barrier Reef - and growing in early childhood education and care.

From stunning natural experiences in real Australiana, Townsville has a lot going for it, including rich and varied career paths at Goodstart.

Here, our award-winning kindergarten teacher reveals her top tips for those considering a move into the sector, into work at one of our 600+ centres, or into Townsville. In Kylie's own words:

Meaningful career journey in early learning

I'm the early childhood teacher (ECT) in the kindergarten room at Goodstart Kirwan - Golf Links Drive, but I began my journey as a stay-at-home mum. When I was ready to return to the workforce, I chose early learning and joined Goodstart.

I started as a student on placement, then became an assistant educator, and soon progressed to lead educator. Eventually, I took on the role of kindergarten teacher.

I’ve also recently completed my Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) and continue to learn and grow every day.

Relationship with Townsville and its community

I’m originally from Townsville and have raised my family here. I’ve always loved the community feel and the opportunities Townsville offers for both career and family life.

Townsville has been an amazing place to live and raise my children. The community is welcoming, the weather is beautiful year-round, and there are so many family-friendly spaces, parks, beaches, and great schools. For me, it hits the perfect balance between nature, community, and opportunity.

Our community is vibrant and diverse, with a strong sense of connection. There’s always something happening, from local markets and festivals to cultural celebrations.

I especially love how supportive the local early learning community is. We also have access to beautiful attractions like The Strand and Castle Hill, and there’s a real commitment to sustainability and inclusion in the area.

3 must-dos for new visitors and residents alike

  • Walk along The Strand at sunset, it’s stunning.
  • Visit the top of Castle Hill for fantastic views of Townsville.
  • Spend a day exploring Jezzine Barracks and its boardwalk, rich in history, culture, and perfect for kids to explore.

Career highlights and personal growth at Goodstart

I love the support and value Goodstart places on educators. There’s a strong culture of professional growth, inclusion, and collaboration.

We are empowered to bring our strengths to the table and supported to explore new ideas that benefit children’s learning and wellbeing.

Being named Teacher of the Year in the 2023 Goodies Awards was a highlight. But beyond that, I feel that every day we are making a difference.

Whether it’s helping a child overcome a fear, supporting a family, or mentoring a colleague, it all reminds me why Goodstart is such a meaningful place to work.

We need teachers and educators in Townsville. Could that be you?
