Petition calls for affordable childcare

Government and sector

A campaign is calling on the government to ensure their childcare reform package delivers more affordable child care for families as well as improving access for vulnerable children.

The Smart Start Campaign, which has launched a petition gathering support from parents and interested parties, is calling on the government to increase funding for early learning and childcare, provide more support and access to early learning and childcare for children who are vulnerable, and continue to support quality through improved ratios and qualified educators.

And while it believes the government’s Jobs for Families childcare legislation would be a good package for working families, it wants the changes to go further.

Since the reforms to childcare were first proposed in May 2015 the early learning sector, including Goodstart Early Learning, has welcomed the new funding for families but pushed for more assistance for vulnerable children – especially those from non-working families.

Goodstart Early Learning advocacy manager John Cherry said close to one million Australian families relied on childcare to allow them to work, study or volunteer.

“The Government’s proposed changes will improve childcare affordability for the vast majority of them,” Mr Cherry said.

“Families have been waiting patiently for the Government to deliver on its promises over two elections to make childcare more accessible and more affordable,” he said.

“Families are struggling with cost of living pressures now and they need certainty that their childcare costs will be reduced as promised.
