Opinion: we should be outraged at the delay in childcare reform
Ever since before the Coalition Government was even elected in 2013, it has been promising, year after year, to take action to address the real issue of affordability and accessibility of early learning and care for Australian families.
The immediate reality for thousands of Australian families is that the cost of childcare is too much. Many can’t afford it now. This means their children are missing out on the benefits of early learning, and mums and dads are missing out on the benefits of being back in work. With that combination, we’re all missing out.

Riverine Herald – Goodstart Moama bitten by the gardening bug
Children from Goodstart Early Learning Moama had fun getting their hands dirty while caring for their environment. The children visited Moama Community Garden next door for some hands-on experience in watering the plants and vegetables. The garden, which opened in January 2014, is a joint partnership between Murray and Campaspe shires, Campaspe Primary Care Partnership and partner agencies.

WIN News – Goodstart Mildura Growing Green Thumbs
WIN News visited Goodstart Early Learning Mildura as they received lessons in how to become green thumbs. Children from the centre were delighted to get their hands dirty planting zucchinis in their vegetable garden. The children were also taught how to create compost from waste food scraps and taking care of fruit plants and trees. It’s part of a sustainability project by the centre to foster environmental skills at a young age.

Adelaide Advertiser – Kids learn better in the dirt
Goodstart State Manager Lesley Jones supports the need for parents encouraging their children to go outside and smell the roses instead of relying on screens for entertainment. Ms Jones said children needed to feel the dirt running through their fingertips, and other activities like reading helps children to create a world they would be able to reach in real life, playing a vital role in helping children develop critical language and communication skills.

Judith Ireland writes that the Federal Government announced changes to the proposed Paid Parental Leave scheme and is redirecting funds into child care. She highlights that Goodstart has called for a focus on vulnerable children, arguing vulnerable children would benefit most from improving access to early education. ABC Radio National Interview with John Cherry, Goodstart Early Learning Advocacy Manager. John discusses the Productivity Commission and support for childcare. The Productivity Commission is expected to recommend a boost to funding and an easing of regulations to allow more under qualified workers into the sector. Conversation was centred around the Productivity Commission, with discussion including funding boosts, simplification of the childcare payment, labour being the single biggest cost, the cost of facilities, and solutions to the staffing shortages. John also highlighted that all recommendations need to meet the key objectives of workforce participation and child development outcomes.
