Goodstarters shine at 2022 HESTA Awards

Awards and events

Goodstart Glenfield Park, NSW, has been recognised for advancing early childhood education and setting new benchmarks after winning the Advancing Pedagogy & Practice award at the 2022 HESTA Early Childhood Education and Care Awards last Friday.

Goodstart Woongarrah was also one of three national finalists in the Outstanding Organisation category in recognition of their work to create an inclusive learning environment for all the children in their care.

Goodstart Acting CEO Jeff Harvie said that he was proud to see the recognition of Goodstarters who were living and breathing Goodstart’s vision and purpose.

“Both centre teams are doing incredible work day in and day out to ensure all children feel a strong of belonging, because we know once a child belongs, they thrive. Giving all children, no matter their background of life circumstances, the very best start in life is what we stand for.”

“Their work will undoubtedly inspire other Goodstarters but also have wider positive impacts across the sector through information-sharing about great practice that’s making a positive impact on children.”

Jeff said the national accolade for Goodstart Glenfield Park was great reward for the centre team who has worked tirelessly to create a welcoming and safe environment that facilitates positive interactions for all children and their families.

With their program ‘Trauma-Informed Mindfulness’, the Glenfield Park team continue to work towards their goal of supporting families whose children are experiencing trauma.

The program has helped educators support children to regulate their emotions and better engage in learning resulting in lower anxiety levels and greater self-acceptance for the children, as well as improved focus while learning.

The team aspires to deepen their knowledge about trauma in children and share their knowledge and trauma-informed practices in their local community.

As a national finalist for the Outstanding Organisation category, Goodstart Woongarrah’s work to create an inclusive learning environment for all the children in their care has been recognised. The award seeks to recognise centres that implemented strategies to improve access and participation for child and families that may otherwise face barriers to accessing early learning.

The centre achieved this through the use of ‘inclusion mapping’ which involves painting a holistic picture of each child and families’ specific needs.

From this, the centre was then able to create a tailored learning approach including - a mindfulness curriculum and engaging an Occupational Therapist to help educators understand the children’s different learning styles.
Through their work, the centre has created ‘genuine, trusting relationships’ with their families and improved learning outcomes through early intervention.

By embedding mindfulness practices in their centres, the team hope to share their knowledge with the early childhood community.

The HESTA Early Childhood Education and Care Awards recognise organisations, teams and individuals across the early learning sector, with the presentation bringing the 2022 ECA conference to a close.
