When Cyclone Debbie hit Queensland earlier this month, it caused more than $1.5 billion worth of damage throughout the country.
Many families were left without a roof over their heads, losing everything in just a couple of few days.
To help those who have lost a lot, the team at Goodstart Brighton – Brighton Road prepared Shoeboxes of Love for the victims.
Shoeboxes of Love is an initiative that started in January 2011 as a response to the floods in Brisbane. Since then, thousands of boxes have been sent throughout the country to those in need of help.
They are distributed to those in need by the Australian Red Cross.
Brighton - Brighton Road educator Tayla Benzi said she hoped to pack a couple of the boxes to help families in need.
“I let the families know what we were doing via Storypark and then the donations started coming in. From my initial idea of creating two boxes, we ended up making 11 shoesboxes filled with the things people need most,” Ms Benzi said.
“We thought it would be lovely to get the toddlers involved so they could learn about people who have been affected by Cyclone Debbie. It’s all about teaching them sharing and compassion.”
The team created a baby box, five two-four year old boxes, two seven-year-old boxes, two teenage boxes and an adult female box.
All of the boxes include a pair of socks, soap, toothbrushes, toys and the toddler ones have a pretend camera. All of them also had some stationary and a book.
“We collected the items over about two weeks, the children helped packed the boxes and we sent them off,” Ms Benzi said. “It was a great activity for everyone.”
