Induction program announced for new teachers

Careers and employment

New teachers at Goodstart Early Learning will benefit from a Teacher Induction Program designed to help graduate and experienced teachers settle into their new role.

Goodstart's head of the teacher program Katey De Gioia said the program focused on helping teachers build their confidence, refine their teaching practice and build relationships with educators, children and families.

“The new program gives teachers access to 19 hours of induction time which includes seven hours of mandatory training and 12 hours of activities selected to meet each teacher’s individual needs,” Dr De Gioia said.

“There’s lots of flexibility allowing teachers to work closely with their centre director to develop a personalised induction plan.”

The program also offers a range of tools and resources, professional development opportunities and support from across the organisation.

“As an organisation we recognise the importance of induction and the impact it has on our teachers.”

“Providing a great induction not only strengthens a teacher’s ongoing development of skills and knowledge, it also improves job satisfaction and commitment, increases wellbeing and reduces teacher attrition. This in turn has a positive impact on ensuring high quality outcomes for children and families,” Dr De Gioia said.

She said the new induction program had been well received by centre directors and teachers so far.

"This is a great program that makes teachers feel welcome and sets them up for success in their new role,” she said.

Goodstart used the Graduate to Proficient Australian Guidelines for Teacher Induction into the Profession (https://www.aitsl.edu.au/tools-resources/resource/graduate-to-proficient-australian-guidelines-for-teacher-induction-into-the-profession) as a source of critical reflection in reviewing and launching their Teacher Induction Program.

The new induction program is one of many initiatives aimed at making Goodstart a great place for teachers to work.  Working behind the scenes on these initiatives, Dr De Gioia leads a team which provide support for teachers nationally. In addition to the induction, this team provides programs in mentoring, professional learning, teaching and learning.
