Each centre receives an overall rating – from Excellent to Significant Improvement Required – displayed publicly. Centres awaiting assessment may show Provisional.  

Ratings are a great starting point, but quality goes beyond numbers. 

What to look for beyond the rating 

Educators and staffing

Educators are the heart of every centre. When visiting, ask: 

• What qualifications and experience do educators hold?
• What is the staff-to-child ratio?
• How long have key staff been with the service?

Look for warm, responsive educators who engage with children at their level, encouraging their ideas and celebrating their achievements. 

Learning environment and program

A quality environment is stimulating and comforting. Look for: 

• A play-based, child-led program based on the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)
• A balance of indoor and outdoor spaces that encourage exploration, creativity and movement

Ask to see a typical day's routine. Does it include plenty of time for free play, group activities, and quiet rest periods?

As you visit centres, look for these positive signs: 

• Children appear happy, curious, and engaged
• Educators are responsive and attentive
• The space feels calm, organised, and safe
• Artwork and projects show children's learning
• Clear security and check-in procedures are in place
• Staff greet you warmly and are happy to share information

If the atmosphere feels welcoming and you can picture your child thriving, it's a strong sign you've found a great fit.
