Call for dads to get reading

Lifestyle

Fathers who make a practice of reading with their children actually become better parents over time, according to a new study by New York University.

The study also found children of fathers who read in the home on a regular basis had shown a 30 per cent improvement in their school-readiness and language-development scores.

Their fathers’ parenting behaviour improved by 30 per cent well. The behaviours included creating routines, offering rewards for positive behaviour and ignoring their child’s attention-seeking behaviour.

The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology, found children’s overall behaviour improved when their father’s spent more time reading to them.

The dads of the younger children said they had a number of favourite books including Dragons Love Tacos, Moustache Baby and The Monster at the End of the Book.

For older children, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Bicycle Bear and Stuck were popular.

Research conducted by the University of Queensland has clearly shown that an important determinant for a child's success at school is how much they are exposed to reading from a young age.
