Supporting the call for sustainable kindergarten funding

Government and sector

Australia’s largest early learning provider, Goodstart Early Learning, welcomed today’s launch of the Federal Opposition’s new campaign calling on the Government to lock in long-term funding arrangements for kindergarten and preschool across Australia.

Goodstart Advocacy Manager John Cherry said he was pleased to see the recognition of the importance of securing long term sustainable funding for preschool and kindergarten programs.

“Currently funding beyond 2019 is not guaranteed”, he said.

“We strongly support moving preschool/kindergarten funding onto a sustainable, long term footing and are calling on both sides to deliver that.

“Research shows that children who have attended quality preschool programs are half as likely as those that don’t to start school developmentally at risk, and perform 20-30 points higher in NAPLAN literacy and numeracy tests in Year 3.

“We look forward to seeing more detail around the Government and the Opposition’s long-term funding plans.”

Mr Cherry says he encourages everyone wanting every child to have the best possible start to life to join Goodstart’s SmartStart campaign.

“Join tens of thousands of other parents and educators working together to make sure our leaders deliver quality, affordable early learning for all Australian children.”
