Ensuring kindergarten children start school confident and eager to learn is the aim of Goodstart Wynnum West – Wondall Road’s work to strengthen ties with local school communities.
It’s not even halfway through the year and already the kindergarten children have visited two schools and had many more come to visit them in a mini school fair at the centre.
Assistant director and early childhood teacher Shannon Higgins said that by building relationships with local schools both the kindergarten children and centre team is benefiting.
“Our kindergarten children are getting excited about all the things they’ll learn next year and our educators are getting the opportunity to interact with teachers in our region - strengthening our own knowledge and practices.”
“By experiencing what school looks and feels like, we will help our kindergarten children to feel comfortable, valued, relaxed and able to cultivate new friendships.
“The buzz word these days is ‘readiness’, and to us that means a socially and emotionally confident child who already has a love of learning embedded from day one of their primary school journey.”
First came an exciting bus ride to Wynnum West State School for a music class, organised by centre director Elsa Faguet.
“By going along to music class full of dancing, singing and laughter the children saw for themselves that there was so much fun learning to look forward to at school.”
Extending on the journey that school is about so much more than reading and writing, the kindergarten children recently made the trek up the hill to the Wondall Heights State School oval for the annual athletics carnival.
The children got the opportunity to see old friends from last year and even barrack for siblings – not to mention compete in a running race all of their own.
“Getting that opportunity to engage, and even compete, in a school event was such an incredible opportunity for our kindergarten children to feel what belonging to a school will be like next year.”
“We know it’s a memory they will hold on to for a long time.”
There are more trips planned to more schools in the future that the team at Goodstart Wynnum West – Wondall Road will share on their Facebook page.
“We’re spoilt for choice for great schools in this area – it’s one of the reasons we held a school fair back in May – to help parents work their way through the decision.”
“We’ll definitely make it an annual event with the invitation extended to our friends at Goodstart Wynnum West – Crawford Road again too.”
