The council’s annual Frantastic Food Safety Awards showcase organisations committed to providing the safest food possible- something that is a major priority for centre director Mona Aragon.
“We have worked hard to ensure our kitchen is as healthy as it can be in every way,” she said.
“Not only do we regularly audit our food safety practices, but we are also constantly looking at our menus and making sure we use the healthiest and freshest ingredients we can.
“We have recently welcomed a new centre cook, who is a qualified pastry chef and we have a major focus on how good food can promote healthy brain development for children.”
Children are encouraged to learn about healthy foods and families are also armed with new recipes and information about healthy eating.
“Since we have had such a strong focus on healthy foods, we’ve had a lot of parent feedback about how well their children are eating and how interested they are in different kinds of foods.”
Parents are also welcome to borrow resources about healthy eating and they have access to a community pantry and regularly updated recipes that the service provides in conjunction with the local IGA.
“The parents love that they can come and get a healthy recipe and then access some supplies to go home and make it that night,” she said.
