Goodstart Aspley celebrates NAIDOC Week

Goodstart centres

Throughout this week children from Goodstart Apsley will be exploring and celebrating the history, culture and languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through a range of activities.

Centre director Michelle Buchanan said parents will be volunteering their time to help lead the NAIDOC Week celebrations.

“Children will learn about Dreamtime stories as part of a special storytelling session by one of our Dads. Another of our Dads will be coming in to give a didgeridoo performance for children,” Ms Buchanan said.

“Our arts and craft activities will be inspired by our Indigenous culture and one of our mums is coming along to get involved in the art class so it will be great to see the children’s creations.

“Another exciting activity we have planned for Wednesday at 10am is an Indigenous inspired aerobics class which has been designed by another of our Mums, so that will definitely be an exciting highlight and something new to our centre program.

“NAIDOC Week is a special celebration in our centre and every year we find new ways to create meaningful learning experiences for children so they can better understand and respect our unique first Australian culture and heritage,” she said.

NAIDOC Week is celebrated across the country from 2-9 July. This year’s theme ‘Our Languages Matter’ aims to celebrate the essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.
