The heart of giving

Goodstart centres

Climbing, crawling, bouncing and hopping were on the agenda for Goodstart Kirwan children last month as they took part in an event for a good cause.

The special Obstacle-A-Thon was hosted by the centre as part of a fundraising event for the charity, HeartKids.

The event was organised in support of one of Goodstart’s families who have been personally effected by heart disease and have relied on the support from the HeartKids organisation. Their son, Archer Ferguson was born with severe heart complications.

Archer was the first child for his parents, who were told when he was born that he would need a series of open heart surgeries to survive.

The Ferguson family had to move from Townsville to Brisbane to be close to cardiac specialist teams, and Archer’s first open heart surgery took place at just one week of age and lasted 10 hours.

At four months old, Archer had his second surgery, which lasted 12 hours. He needed nasogastric feeding for the first year of his life. Having recovered from his surgeries, the Fergusons have now returned home to north Queensland and Archer will continue to need future open heart surgeries as he grows.

Throughout this ordeal, Archer’s family relied on the support of the team from HeartKids, who provided emotional, physical and sometimes financial assistance. HeartKids also carries out awareness programs and research into childhood heart disease.

With the support from children and families, Goodstart has raised $1090 for HeartKids.
