Learn about an Early Childhood Teacher's pivotal role in childcare, preschool and kindergarten environments.

Early learning

Article by Deni Kirkova

An Early Childhood Teacher – ECT or Teacher for short – plays a pivotal role in childcare, preschool and kindergarten environments, like Goodstart Early Learning. Here, we'll explain what a Teacher in early learning does and why they're critical for children’s early education and development.

The work of Early Childhood Teachers goes beyond supervision and care. They play a vital role in long day care and preschool settings, ensuring children aged birth to five are developing through quality learning environments, relationships and learning experiences

Teachers apply professional expertise and a deep understanding of child development to shape the first five years of children's lives: the most critical period for brain development, social growth, and lay the foundation for lifelong learning.

What defines an Early Childhood Teacher?

An ECT is a university-qualified Teacher who specialises in the education and development of children from birth to five years old.

Their initial teacher education (ITE) degree qualification equips them with skills in early learning curriculum design, child psychology, wellbeing, and pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching).

Day to day, a Teacher will:

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate learning programs tailored to children's interests, strengths, and needs
  • Support children in developing key skills such as communication, problem-solving, creativity, and emotional regulation
  • Monitor and document children's progress and development, sharing insights with families
  • Create inclusive environments where every child feels a sense of belonging
  • Collaborate with families and colleagues to ensure children are supported holistically.

In short, their role combines teaching, mentoring, and caring responsibilities – all grounded in evidence-based practice that prioritises children's wellbeing and growth. How awesome is that?

Why are Teachers so important in early learning?

While play is central to early childhood, ECTs recognise the powerful learning that happens through playWhile play is central to early childhood, Teachers recognise the powerful learning that happens through play

Decades of research show that children who experience high-quality early education experience better outcomes at school and beyond. Qualified teachers are central to ensuring that quality. Their training enables them to bring a depth of knowledge and intentional teaching strategies that enrich children's daily experiences.

For example, while play is central to early childhood, Teachers recognise the powerful learning that happens through play. They design play-based environments and experiences that encourage curiosity, collaboration, and problem-solving. A simple activity like building with blocks can become a lesson in maths, engineering, and teamwork - all guided by a Teacher's expertise.

Teachers identify and respond to developmental needs, offering tailored support or referrals where appropriate. This early intervention can make a significant difference for children who may need additional support, ensuring no child is left behind.

Qualifications and professional standards

In Australia, Teachers must hold a four-year teaching degree (such as a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education) or an equivalent postgraduate qualification.

They are also required to meet the professional standards of the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), ensuring consistency and quality across the sector.

Everyone in sector is required to meet the ACECQA standards. Teachers are also required to uphold the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

These are a public statement that describes the professional knowledge, professional practice and professional engagement required of teachers in the early childhood sector as well as in both primary and secondary schools.

The standards are interconnected, interdependent and reflect the complex role of the teacher.

Teachers commit to ongoing professional development throughout their careers, keeping up to date with the latest research, teaching methods, and legislative requirements.

This lifelong learning mindset ensures they continue to provide the best possible support to children and families.

The difference between an ECT and an Educator

Educators and ECTs form the heart of every Goodstart centreEducators and ECTs form the heart of every Goodstart centre

Families often ask about the difference between a Teacher and an Educator. Both play vital roles in creating a nurturing, high-quality early learning experience – and together, they form the heart of every Goodstart centre.

  • Early Childhood Teachers are university-qualified professionals who specialise in the education and development of children from birth to five years. They lead the design of play-based learning programs, mentor colleagues, and ensure every program meets national quality standards. Their expertise in child development helps lift educational outcomes and support every child’s learning journey.
  • Early Childhood Educators, typically holding a Certificate III or Diploma, are the hands-on practitioners who nurture, guide, and connect with children every day. They help bring learning programs to life through play, conversation, and daily routines, supporting each child’s individual growth.

Together, teachers and educators form a powerful partnership – combining professional expertise with genuine care. Teachers lead and inspire learning, while educators provide the consistency and connection children need to thrive. This teamwork is what makes Goodstart such a special place for children to feel safe, confident, and ready for the next stage of their learning adventure.

Building strong partnerships with families

One of the hallmarks of an effective Teacher is their ability to work in partnership with families.

They recognise that parents and carers are a child's first teachers, and they value the knowledge families bring about their child's unique interests, culture, and needs.

By maintaining open communication and involving families in the learning process, Teachers help create consistency between home and the early learning environment. This strengthens children's sense of security and supports their overall development.

The impact of a Teacher

The presence of a Teacher in an early learning centre can have lasting benefits for children. They bring intentionality to teaching, ensuring every interaction and activity has meaning and purpose. They nurture curiosity, creativity, and confidence, giving children the skills and mindset to become lifelong learners.

For families, knowing their child is supported by a qualified teacher provides reassurance that their education is in expert hands.

For children, the impact can be life-changing, building strong foundations not only for school readiness but also for resilience, social-emotional skills, and a love of learning.
