A fortnightly storytelling session at Anderson Park will help Goodstart Young celebrate its 11-year anniversary and new exceeding rating.

The centre, which opened its doors in 2006, has invited the whole community to join in the storytelling sessions for Goodstart Young’s three to five year olds, from next Wednesday (February 1) at 10.30am.

The sessions will be followed up with a baby and toddler story session at the Young centre on alternate weeks.
Assistant centre director Amy Ryan said the centre had worked hard to achieve its exceeding rating in all seven areas, and wanted to share its success with the community.

“We’ve been here for 11 years now and have a real focus on our local community,” Ms Ryan said. “We love visiting the local Woolworths, the library and other shops with our children and now we’re encouraging the community to come to us.”

The story-telling sessions will including reading picture books, singing and “told stories” where the educators use props to tell the stories. Up to 10 children will take part each fortnight.

“Our aim is the build the children’s literacy skills while building our community connections,” Ms Ryan said.
She said the team at Young had developed many initiatives during the past few years to ensure the exceeding rating, with sustainability and the natural environment the main focus.

“We built vegetable gardens and grow things like tomatoes and zucchini, and we’ve built up a preschool recycling program with encourages the children to bring their recyclables from home.”

She said the centre also conserved water and used natural materials where possible.

“We’re very proud of our progress and look forward to celebrating with the wider community.”
