Time to get reading

Making reading fun for children is one way of encouraging them to be life-long readers. And that’s why many Goodstart Early Learning centres will participate the National Simultaneous Storytime initiative tomorrow (May 22) at 11am.

Children will read Australian picture book Alpacas With Maracas written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove.

With more than 70,500 children attending Goodstart centres, language and literacy development is a vital part of children’s overall development. It’s the foundation for doing well at school, socialising with others, developing independence, and succeeding in life.

Research conducted by the University of Queensland has shown that an important determinant for a child's success at school is how much they are exposed to reading from a young age.

Books introduce new ideas, new words, and opportunities to learn about the world. Understanding that the book’s contents (pictures and text) have meaning is a form of early literacy.
Goodstart’s aim is to ensure every child in every centre has access to high-quality language and literacy curriculum and pedagogy to enrich their imagination and develop vital language and literacy skills from an early age.

National Simultaneous Storytime is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association and was established to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book.
