Help for inner city parents

Goodstart centres

When City of Sydney research revealed it was facing a 3000-place shortfall in early childhood places, it made a commitment to providing affordable, high quality childcare for inner city families.

It connected with Goodstart Early Learning and the latest result is the launch of The Crescent Early Learning Centre at Annandale, one of three new centres operated by Goodstart in Sydney’s inner city.

The centre has a bike track, vegetable patches, shaded outdoor play area with sandpits and can accommodate up to 80 children. It’s next to Federal Park, near public transport and joins two other new Goodstart centres in Sydney, at Darlinghurst and Alexandria.

Healthy and nutritious food will be included and prepared by an onsite cook in the commercial kitchen. Children who are gluten and lactose intolerant are catered for.

Centre director Jo-Anne Garland has been with Goodstart Early Learning for 10 years and in an early learning centre environment for 18 years. She is currently studying Aboriginal languages, has a passion for inclusion practices, education and the wellbeing of children.

Goodstart CEO Julia Davison said the Annandale centre would continue the not-for-profit organisation’s commitment to providing affordable high quality early learning.

“Partnering with City of Sydney to promote much-needed, affordable long day care and preschool programs aligns with our commitment to ensuring all Australia’s children have access to high quality early learning, giving them the best possible start in life,” she said.

“Goodstart is committed to enhancing outcomes for children in vulnerable circumstances and will provide priority access to children with additional support needs, children from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, and children who speak a language at home other than English.

“We aim to create a centre that is a highly valued part of the inner west community.”

Goodstart Early Learning is Australia’s largest early learning provider and will open two other centres in collaboration with the City of Sydney this year. Huntley Street Early Learning Centre at Alexandria and the East Sydney Early Learning Centre at Darlinghurst will open their doors in September.

Two additional centres, one in north Melbourne and one in Brisbane’s inner city, will open their doors in late 2016 and early 2017. Places are still available at The Crescent from $95 per day.
